The NCAA Tournament selection committee must adhere to a number of principles when building the bracket. These include balance among top-4 seeds, tournament site distances from campus, avoiding rematches, and much more.

Teams selected to participate in the NCAA Tournament are placed into the bracket based on mileage distance from the tournament’s subregional (first and second round) and regional (Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight) sites.
