Bauertology: 1/13/23

You know college basketball is starting to get really good when twice-a-week Bauertology returns!

I’ve had a little bit of free time on my hands since I’ve been stuck at home sick for the past week or so, so why not spend it making some brackets? And I think this one is probably my most accurate so far.

You’ll notice a couple minor changes—mainly that, with every team now having 4-6 conference games under their belt, I’ve made the switch from giving automatic bids to the teams that are highest ranked in KenPom or “look the best,” to the teams that actually lead their respective conferences. So mid-majors like Sam Houston and Marshall have exited for the likes of Utah Valley and Troy, while Clemson gets to avoid the Dayton play-in games by claiming the ACC’s automatic bid.

We’re also seeing a bit of a Mountain West resurgence à la last season with four teams in the field (the most I’ve had in since mid-December) and two more waiting just outside, while the SEC is down to just five teams in with Kentucky imploding and Mississippi State falling slightly out of the field. But they do have Alabama creeping up to the 1-line with a big win at Arkansas, so they’ve got power at the top.

The rest of the changes you can see below in the latest bracket. As always, constructive feedback is welcome, and let me know if you catch any errors!
