Bauertology: 1/22/24

Thanks the heavens that Selection Sunday isn’t tomorrow.

That’s not just because we’re still hungry for more fun, competitive conference play night in and night out, making days like this past Saturday’s college hoops bonanza the days worth living for, but for bracketology purposes as well.

Because we’re just throwing darts at the wall right now.

Well, there’s a little more science than that, of course. We’re not going to pull something completely out of the blue like making Georgia Tech a 5 seed or anything. But in terms of figuring out the proper order for each of these teams right now? And figuring out which 68 make the cut in the first place? It ain’t easy.

This is one of the messiest late January bubbles I can remember. Teams from the 8 to 12 lines can make any valid argument to be placed anywhere. There are approximately 20 teams right along that cut line area that are either just in or just out. An absurd amount of teams possess metrics that refuse to agree with each other, with either super high predictive numbers and super low performance numbers or vice versa. It’s madness.

But we still have two months to go; that’s plenty of time for things to start sorting themselves out, and that top-16 preview show the committee always does in mid-February will help clear up things a ton.

Best we can do ’til then is make our best guess! And that’s what I’ve done here after spending all of Sunday and all of Monday morning making sure things are just right. Enjoy the Bauertology projection for Jan. 22, and feel free to share your comments and concerns as always! I’ll do my best to answer for this mess below.
